With nearly 35 years experience, Gary's work in finance and risk management is unparalleled in its intellectual rigor and actuarial influence. He currently is the President of The Gary Venter Company, an actuarial consulting firm with a focus on the latest methodology, especially for improving models and how they are used in decision making for insurance and financial risk management industry. Gary is also a Senior Advisor for the Insurance Practice of Oliver Wyman,* an international management consulting firm with over 2900 professionals on staff.

From 1994-2009, Mr. Venter was a Managing Director at Guy Carpenter and its predecessors and helped to conceive and develop Meta Risk, their risk, reinsurance, and financial modeling platform. He also served as President of the Workers’ Compensation Reinsurance Bureau from 1987-1994 and as a Vice President with the National Council on Compensation Insurance from 1982-1987. In his early career, he was an Actuarial Director with Prudential Reinsurance from 1977-1982 and worked with the Fireman’s Fund from 1973-1977.



Mr. Venter currently also serves as the Actuary in Residence at Columbia University. In addition, he is Associate Editor of the Casualty Actuarial Society’s publication, Variance, and on the editorial boards of the North American Actuarial Journal of the Society of Actuaries and the International Actuarial Society’s Astin Bulletin.


Gary is a designated Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA). The CERA credential is a relatively newer international credential encompassing the most comprehensive and rigorous demonstration available of enterprise risk management. CERAs possess the unique ability to anticipate, identify, quantify and optimize risk to bring about creative solutions to complex financial challenges facing business and society.

The CERA credential was developed in response to the business world's increasing reliance on professionals who are best equipped to convert risk into opportunity. CERAs don't merely speak to what we can lose; they focus on what we can gain.

Gary holds the highest designation (Fellow) of the Casualty Actuarial Society, a professional organization whose purpose
 is the advancement of the body of knowledge of actuarial science applied to property, casualty, and similar risk exposures.

He is a respected member of the American Academy of Actuaries, which is an organization that sets qualifications,
practice and professional standards for Actuaries in the United States. 

Mr. Venter also is an Associate of The Society of Actuaries, the largest professional organization dedicated to serving
20,000 actuarial members and the public in the United States and Canada. It is an international research, education,
and membership organization for actuaries who practice in the life and health insurance, pension, employee
benefits, finance, and investment fields. It administers examinations leading to the professional designations of
Associate (ASA) and Fellow (FSA).
